As Vice President of Center Stage, I work as the philanthropy chair and on our own fundraising events for Charleston HEART. Luckily, I get the pleasure and privilege to be involved with working with our philanthropy. Something a few of our new (and old) members may not know is why we have a philanthropy, what our philanthropy is, and how we can help them as a student run organization.
What is Charleston HEART?
Charleston HEART is the HEART Artist Guild & Theatre Company, an incredible non-profit organization based in downtown Charleston. It’s aim is to create an artistic community for an amazing group of people who may not get the opportunity to create the art they love outside of HEART. When we dropped off the donations from the past year, Farrah Hoffmire, the founding director of HEART, was so wonderful in allowing us to see how a typical day at HEART. She also gave us the gift in being able to meet most of the heARTists! During our visit we got to see some of the heARTists record songs in a professional recording studio, which was incredible to be able to watch them record and then hear it replayed as well, let me tell you HEART puts 100% into everything they do.
The best place you can learn the most about HEART, is from their website and mission statement, as I am only human and cannot describe the incredible talent and passion that the heARTist’s have. So here’s a little excerpt from their website, “HEART is a model for inclusive programs where nature and city adventure, arts, and theatre are used to connect adults (21+) with disabilities and their communities. HEART members (aka; heARTists) create visual and performance art, go on nature & city explorations, and have great fun while making meaningful contributions to society."
Why choose Charleston HEART?
For the past two years Center Stage has chosen Charleston HEART as our philanthropy. Our members and audiences help us raise money during our shows and events to donate to them. Running HEART is expensive and so is tuition. The amazing people who work at HEART and the heARTists who create the wonderful art deserve help from the community in any we can provide it. So far we have been privileged enough to donate over $1,000 to HEART this year and we only aim to be able to provide them with an even bigger donation the next time as well as help in the ways and in the areas they want and need us.
How can you help?
If you are a member of Center Stage, there are a multitude of different ways for you to help and be involved with our philanthropy. You can donate money at Center Stage productions, donate online on their website, sponsor a heARTist, and lastly volunteer with them! As an organization, Center Stage will be volunteering with HEART this upcoming year so look out for details at the start of this next semester!
Don’t forget to stay in touch with HEART to make sure you are up to date with all of their upcoming events as well. Their next event will be A Heartfelt Look at Romeo and Juliet!
“HEART has been invited by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs to perform at Piccolo Spoleto this May/June 2017 AND we have the support and professional mentorship of Charleston Stage Company and PURE Theatre. The Heartists all voted and chose to perform Romeo & Juliet. This is literally a dream come true for HEART Artist Guild & Theatre Company! It is part of our mission to be engaged with and included in the Charleston arts community and to have professional artist mentors working with us.”
The shows will be on Sunday, May 28th and Sunday, June 4th at 12pm both days as a part of Piccolo Spoleto. The shows will be at PURE Theatre 477 King St, Charleston, SC 29403. You can purchase tickets here!
